Sir, The Financial Services Authority claims that hedge fund gearing has decreased (report, May 2) and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York suggests that there is no close correlation between hedge fund returns making the current situation less alarming than in the past (May 3). I believe it was Winston Churchill who said we must alert somnolent authority to novel dangers; but in this matter authority seems complacent, and the dangers are not novel. » more |

$2bn airport projects take lion's share of transport contracts awarded in GCC
Airports captured the bulk of transportation contracts awarded in the first five months of 2012 with $2bn worth of projects throughout the GCC. Road construction came in second with $1.6bn worth of contracts; followed by port projects valued at $1.2bn while rail contracts awarded reached $424m.

Emirates drive to train pilots as Middle East demand expected to increase by 36,000 pilots over the next 20 years
Audio: The global airline industry is expected to require a further 460,000 pilots over the next 20 years, with expectations in the Middle East for a further 36,000 flight deck crew. The Emirates Aviation College in Dubai offers an number of courses for future pilots and other aviation industry professionals as highlighted by Dr Ahmed Al Ali, Vice Chancellor in this interview with Phil Blizzard.

DP World shares remain under pressure
The FTSE NASDAQ Dubai UAE 20 Index closed at 1565.72 off 1.03%, from the previous close. Dubai Ports (DP) World plummeted 2.86% to close at $10.20, as 224k shares were traded, valued at $2.33m.
